Après un début de saison difficile de 2 victoires à leurs 10 premiers matchs, les partisans des Caps pointaient du doigt la défensive poreuse et les gardiens qui n’arrêtaient pas un ballon de plage. Les choses se sont ensuite replacées avec 6 parties sans défaites en temps règlementaire, grandement grâce au bon travail du tandem composé de John Gibson et Cal Petersen dans les buts.
Les Capitals se situent assez bien actuellement à la deuxième place d’une division Métropolitaine féroce où seulement 5 points séparent la 1ère à la 7e place.
Du côté de l’attaque de l’équipe, Ryan Johansen se rachète de sa dernière saison décevante avec la meilleure production d’un attaquant de l’équipe. Son trio composé avec Daniel Sprong et le nouveau venu Erik Haula s’avère à être la bougie d’allumage que l’équipe avait besoin.
Pour la défensive, Morgan Rielly et Jeff Petry continuent à être les piliers de l’équipe à l’arrière alors que les jeunes Jacob Bryson et Tobias Bjornfot poursuivent leur développement sur la 3e paire de défenseurs de l’équipe.
L’état-major de l’équipe se déclare assez surpris de la performance de l’équipe alors qu’on s’attendait davantage à une année de transition pour les Capitals de Washington. Étant donné qu’on souhaite écouler les dernières années de contrats « boulets » de Justin Abdelkader et Bobby Ryan, on devrait donc s’attendre à un gros été 2022 de la part des Capitals!
