Le 18 janvier 2022 marque le début d'une nouvelle ère dans la capitale nationale. Après trois années marquées par l'accumulation de choix de repêchage et de jeunes joueurs prometteurs, la direction générale met en branle la deuxième étape du plan de reconstruction de l'équipe. Cette deuxième étape a pour objectif l'acquisition de pièces importantes pouvant contribuer à l'essor d'un nouvel environnement de hockey. L'équipe souhaite tirer parti de certains actifs dans l'obtention de jeunes "leaders" talentueux dont le travail sera complémenté par un fort bassin de jeunes.
Le DG passe donc de la parole à l'action. Les Sénateurs d'Ottawa annoncent l'acquisition du joueur étoile Mitchell Marner ainsi qu'un choix de 2e ronde (2023). Sam Bennet, Colin Miller, Braden Schneider ainsi que deux choix de premier tour prennent la direction du comté de Maricopa en Arizona. Par ailleurs, la direction de l'équipe souhaite établir son statut comme "actif" en prévision de la date limite des transactions.
Malgré une saison difficile, l'équipe de direction souhaite témoigner son optimisme quant au succès de l'équipe à moyen terme. Nos investissements en défensive portent fuits alors que l'équipe se retrouve dans le top 10 des organisations allouant le moins de buts à l'adversaire. De plus, notre unité d'infériorité numérique se retrouve au 5e rang du classement général. Le développement de nos jeunes talents orchestré à une bonne exécution de notre plan devrait assurer une amélioration continue des prestations offensives de l'équipe.
