Étant éliminé des séries en 5 matchs aux mains des Flyers, c'est maintenant l'heure du bilan de saison pour les Capitals de Washington.
Pour la première fois depuis l'arrivée en poste du DG Félix-Antoine Tremblay au courant de la saison 2017-2018, les Capitals démontrent enfin de bonnes choses pour l'avenir.
Possédant beaucoup d'espace sous la masse salariale lors de la dernière saison estivale, les Caps ont profités de cette marge de manoeuvre pour mettre la main sur Ondrej Palat, Ryan Johansen, Artem Anisimov et John Klingberg. Alors que Palat et Johansen sont venu renforcer le 1er trio de l'équipe avec Zach Parise, Klingberg est venu compléter une défensive de premier plan avec un Big Three complété de Morgan Rielly et Jeff Petry.
Ces nouvelles acquisitions ont rapidement rapporter des dividendes pour les Capitals alors que l'équipe s'est retrouver au sommet du classement de la LHSOI pendant plusieurs semaines dans la première moitié de la saison 2019-2020. Le brio de John Gibson devant le filet y était certainement pour quelque chose. Après une fiche plus que surprenante après 41 parties, la deuxième moitié de la saison a été un peu plus ardue pour l'équipe alors qu'elle a perdu du galon au classement. Une bonne séquence dans le dernier droit a cependant confirmé le retour de l'équipe dans les séries éliminatoires de la LHSOI, au grand bonheur du DG Félix-Antoine Tremblay. "En début de saison, notre but était de faire les séries. À partir de là, une fois que c'est fait, tout peut arriver" a t'-il confirmé dans son point de presse de fin de saison régulière.
Lors de la première ronde, les Capitals ont surpris les Flyers lors du premier match avec une victoire de 2-1 en prolongation. Les réjouissances ont été courtes alors que les Flyers ont gagné les quatre matchs suivants. Malgré tout, Tremblay tire un bilan positif de son équipe et espère que l'amélioration fulgurante des Caps cette saison n'est qu'un indice des saisons à venir.
Avec l'arrivée imminente des prospects Emil Bemstrom, Tobias Bjornfot et Alex Newhook, le futur semble encourageant pour l'équipe de Washington.
