Après avoir acquis sa place en série grâce à une « Wildcard » en 2019-20, une défaite rapide face aux Stars d’Alexandre Tremblay a plongé le Wild dans une saison morte marquée par l’incertitude. Puis c’est à 2 semaines de préavis que le propriétaire a trouvé son homme.
Rapidement les objectifs ont été clairs, améliorer la défensive, ajouter de la profondeur & se débarrasser de certains contrats était sur la liste de tâche de Cameron. La plupart des cases ont pu être cochées avec les ajouts du quart-arrière John Carlson, de Kyle Palmieri, Barclay Goodrow, Brady Skjei, Noel Acciari, William Carrier, Scott Laughton et finalement Jake McCabe. Les départs de Mike Matheson & Andreas Athanasiou remplissent le troisième objectif.
Si certains changements n’ont pas fait l’unanimité, les départs de Josh Morrissey & Dylan Larkin inquiétaient. Surtout que c’est Lars Eller qui se retrouvait avec les bottes de travail et la pression de 2e centre de l’équipe, mais Eller a bien répondu aux attentes marquant 10 buts, un sommet au Minnesota, amassant 7 mentions d’aides. Chez les mécontents, Sam Bennett est condamné au rôle de 13e attaquant.
Avec un dossier de 14-5-0, bon pour le 3e rang dans la ligue, force est d’admettre que personne ne peut critiquer le travail effectué par Cameron. L’apport des défenseurs n’est pas étranger aux succès, John Carlsson (20 points) & Aaron Ekblad (23 points) sont tous deux parmi les 5 meilleurs arrières du circuit. En l’attaque, Brayden Point (23 points) est l’acteur principal, mais il est bien soutenu par le reste du top 6 qui produisent tous à un rythme de plus ou moins 0,8 point par matchs (Projection de 60 points).
Devant le filet Connor Hellebuyck a encore prouvé pourquoi il est un des meilleurs de la ligue, même si Jonathan Bernier a obtenu plus de temps de glace qu’à l’habitude. Sa fiche de 12 victoires et un seul revers n’auront certainement pas nui à la fiche de l’équipe.
Reste à voir si cette équipe saura maintenir le rythme. Il y a encore des lacunes, notamment contre les équipes de leurs divisions où c’est très compliqué de gagner des matchs, la fiche de 3-4-0 (dont qu’une seule victoire en temps réglementaire) n’est pas désastreuse, mais elle ne reflète pas le portrait global du premier quart de la saison. La bonne nouvelle pour le Wild c’est qu’ils patineront un peu plus souvent au Xcel Energy Center lors de la deuxième moitié de saison, mais d’ici les 20 prochains matchs ils devront s’habituer aux hôtels et continuer de gagner sur la route.
