Au moment d'écrire ces lignes, les Sabres de Buffalo occupent le sixième rang dans la conférence de l'Est, avec 12 victoires au compteur. Si un analyste avait osé faire une telle prédiction à la veille de la première tombée de rondelle de la saison, il aurait subit une rafale d'insultes sur son compte Twitter de la part de la communauté hockey. Le club est loin d'être moribond, mais si on se transpose quelques semaines avant le camp d'entrainement, on se souvient de l'incertitude qui régnait autour du management.
Les Sabres étaient sans directeur général, sans ligne directrice, portait sur son dos de lourds contrats qui n'avaient que très peu de chances de se rentabiliser et la banque de choix étaient complètement décimées par l'ancien état major en place.
L'équipe au fort passé francophone s'est finalement tourné vers Charles Pellerin. Ancien amateur de ligue simulée, il aura fallu plusieurs collègues directeurs générals pour le sortir de sa retraite. Il sera le premier à vous le confirmer, il ne regrette en rien son choix.
Dès son arrivée aux commandes des Sabres, il s'est roulé les manches et amorça la métarphose de l'équipe. Matt Duchene a prit la direction de Détroit, Alex Killorn s'est envolé pour Las Vegas et Jesse Puljujarvi s'est acheté une maison à Candiac où il pourra covoiturer avec ses coéquipiers jusqu'au Centre Bell.
En retour, les Sabres ont fait le plein d'espoirs. Mysak, Homstrom, Struble, Thompson et Soderstrom sont maintenant les Sabres de demain. Un jour, ils apporteront un vent de jeunesse aux Taylor Hall, Alex Pietrangelo et Tomas Hertl.
À la fin de la saison, plusieurs contrats viendront à échéance et offrira à Charles Pellerin un peu plus de flexibilité, et surtout, la chance de mettre le club à sa main.
Les Sabres tenteront de faire les séries éliminatoires, mais ne risquent pas d'y aller le tout pour le tout.
Peut-être même qu'ils réaliseront un doublé, c'est-à-dire compétitionner pour le précieux trophée tout en liquidant quelques joueurs qui ne cadrent pas dans les plans à long terme pour Buffalo.
