Malgré un club intéressant sur papier, les Canes n’ont pas sur se tailler une place dans la danse printanière de l’an passé. La déception était vive dans la direction de l’équipe et ils ont transigé leur premier choix au repêchage et le gros salaire de JVR pour faire l’acquisition d’un bijou de centre en Sean Couturier et d’un choix de 3e ronde qui deviendra Jack Finley. Pour un club qui jalouse ses choix au repêchage, la décision n’est pas passée sous silence dans la communauté partisane du comté de Wake. Les répercutions se sont même fait sentir dans les médias si bien qu’en juin dernier, le journaliste Drew Jackson du News & Observer de Raleigh titrait « Le directeur général aurait-il la berlue? »
Il n’en fallait pas plus pour le bouillant DG pour qu’il prenne en grippe le journaliste habituellement attitré à la couverture des festivals à travers la ville. Il déclara entre autres « Mon Drew, si j’étais toi, je m’en tiendrais au Packapalloza et au Brewgaloo. Laisse les gens de hockey travailler et le temps nous donnera raison. On se croise sur Hillsborough Street! »
Tout porte à croire que le DG avait raison. Après 21 matchs, l’équipe affiche un rendement satisfaisant de 13-7-1. Est-ce que les choses commenceraient à se mettre en place pour l’équipe de Raleigh?
Dans les corridors du PNC arena, on croit que l’ajout de Zdeno Chara pour épauler une bonne défensive et injecter une bonne dose de leadership n’est pas étrangère aux récents succès de l’équipe. Avec ses 14 points en 21 matchs, sa contribution sur la deuxième paire avec Vince Dunn va bien au-delà du leadership dans une défensive ayant déjà une paire superstar en Seth Jones et Roman Josi.
La philosophie de l’équipe de bâtir par le repêchage commencent à payer et le dg est bien content de voir que joueurs comme Huberdeau, Duclair, Nylander, Beauvilier, Suzuki, Tatar, Jones, Dunn sont tous issus du repêchage amateur et que même des joueurs comme Couturier, Schenn, Backlund et Josi résultent d’échangent concoctées à partir de joueurs repêchés par l’organisation.
Interrogé sur son équipe, Rod « je bench plus que toi » Brind’Amour mentionnait ceci à la suite de la victoire satisfaisante contre le Chicago « Notre ligne de centre Couturier, Backlund et Sukuzi me laisse le loisir de placer Schenn à l’aile où il peut se concentrer sur son apport offensif. Contre les blackhawks, c’est la troisième ligne composée de Beauvilier, Suzuki et Tatar qui ont sonné la charge. Ça montre la profondeur de notre club et ça me donne le sourire. Plus de sourire = plus d’énergie pour pousser de la fonte après les matchs et ça, j’adore ça! ». Des paroles justes et humaines qui laissent présager du positif dans cette saison!
Le DG est conscient qu’il lui reste du travail afin de se donner un peu de marge de manœuvre budgétaire avec son équipe mais il est satisfait dans l’ensemble. Le club est compétitif et il y a encore des joueurs intéressants comme Grans, Robertson Dellandrea et Finley dans le filé de coton comme on dit en Caroline du Nord.
