Les années se suivent mais ne se ressemblent pas dans le cas des Capitals de Washington! Alors que l’an dernier, à pareille date, l’équipe se battait pour le sommet du classement général de la LHSOI, le début de la saison 2020-2021 est plutôt décevante.
Ayant une fiche de .500 après les 12 premiers matchs de la saison, les Capitals ont subi une séquence de 7 défaites consécutives mettant ainsi en branle la confiance de l’équipe et de l’état-major. Pendant cette période, les médias ont signalé le manque criant de profondeur de l’équipe alors que l’alignement contient plusieurs jeunes en Bemstrom, Sprong, Brown et Lafferty. Plusieurs changements d’alignement ont d’ailleurs été apportés sans succès, entre autres dans les buts, alors que John Gibson ne semblait même pas en mesure d’arrêter un ballon de plage. Même qu’après la 6e défaite, on pouvait lire dans les tribunes que l’emploi de l’entraineur-chef Todd Reirden était soudainement en péril.
En date du 20 novembre 2020, le noyau de l’équipe a dernièrement repris leur destin en main avec une séquence de 3 victoires. Alors qu’à l’attaque, les Ondrej Palat, Ryan Johansen, Zach Parise et Dylan Strome semblent enfin avoir débloqués offensivement, le Big-3 à la défense (Morgan Rielly, Jeff Petry et John Klingberg) fait enfin preuve de leadership et mène leur équipe vers le chemin de la victoire.
À souligner également la présence rassurante de Collin Delia dans les buts au courant de cette petite séquence de victoires. Saura-t’il ravir le poste de gardien #1 de l’équipe à John Gibson? Est-ce que Todd Reirden est encore l’homme de confiance du DG Tremblay? Est-ce que l’équipe sera un "vendeur" d’ici la fin de la saison? Les prochaines semaines seront importantes afin de déterminer la situation des Capitals.
